The FIA Intercontinental Drifting Cup (IDC) is the first international drifting competition sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) — the global governing body for motorsport.
It was established to bring drifting, a rapidly growing motorsport discipline, into the official FIA family and to create a global platform for the world's top drifters to compete under unified rules.
-
When and Where It Started:
The FIA IDC held its inaugural event in 2017, in Tokyo, Japan, at the famous Odaiba venue — a symbolic location, as Japan is widely considered the birthplace of drifting culture. The choice of Japan reflected drifting's deep roots in Japanese car culture. -
Concept and Purpose:
The FIA wanted to standardize drifting competition formats, technical regulations, and judging criteria across the world — making drifting more professional, structured, and eventually a more globally recognized motorsport discipline, similar to how FIA oversees Formula 1, WRC, and other major championships.
The IDC gathers top drivers from different countries and organizations, allowing them to compete on an international stage beyond their national or series borders. -
How It's Going:
The FIA IDC had its first few editions in Japan (2017, 2018), then moved to Riga, Latvia in 2021, signaling a push towards making it a truly global event.
However, the IDC has faced some challenges:
✅ FIA IDC 2025 will take place in Riga, Latvia from October 3rd to 5th, 2025.
That's a big deal — Riga has already proven itself as one of the strongest drift venues in Europe, with a great track, experienced organizers, and a strong fanbase. Hosting FIA IDC there again shows that Riga is becoming a real center for high-level international drifting.
